Dabbling in Digital-My Memories Suite Scrapbooking Software Giveaway

I'll be honest with you I am not much of a scrapbooker-- not because I don't like it or am not good at it but just that I never seem to have enough time for it. If I am going to make time to craft it's usually to do my cards or some sort of holiday decoration. The funny thing is that I aspire to be a scrapbooker-- I'm constantly snapping pics of my two little ones and have about three unfinished scrapbooks floating around my house right now--so when I was asked to review My Memories Suite Digital Scrapbooking Software I was truly intrigued.

The My Memories Suite software is so easy to use that it makes putting fabulous pages together quick and effortless--before you know it you can put that baby book together that you have been meaning to do for the longest time. I put this page together of my baby daughter in about 15 minutes and I love it! It has everything I would incorporate into my paper scrapbooks--the layers, the textures and the soft vintage feel.

One of the biggest elements that appeals to me about digital srapbooking software is the literally hundreds of amazing kits out there to satisfy my paper addiction! And I don't even need to worry about finding space in my little craft room to store the kits, everything fits comfortably on my memory stick. I have a file on my memory stick for digi kits that I can easily open in the My Memories Suite Software to access anything I need. Not only do independent designers make digi kits but I've been noticing that big name paper companies like Cosmo Cricket and Echo Park Papers are now offering their latest releases as digital kits too. So the sky is the limit!

My Memories Suite Software makes it very easy for you to share your pages too. In order to post these pages to my blog I was able to export the pages as JPEG's and save them on my memory stick--now I can take them wherever I want and share them on the web. Also, they have a great wizard for uploading your pages to their server where you can put together and purchase a hard copy of your digital pages.

I'll admit that at first I was a bit skeptical, would I have to sacrifice my beloved vintage style for a quick convenient fix? To my pleasant surprise, not at all! There are a number of wonderful digital kits out there to choose from to suite any style. My Memories offers a number of them in their on-line store which you can purchase and upload directly to their software, as well there are a bunch of other on-line resources where you can grab great kits which can also be used with the My Memories Suite Software. The best part is that most digital kits are available for a fraction of the cost of a paper kit and if you are resourceful enough you can even find free kits on-line for you to use in your digital pages.

The My Memories Suite Software is not only for scrapbooking. Since I'm crazy about card making I thought I would give that a try using the software. Both of these card images were made with the software along with various elements from different digital kits I had purchased and a few freebies I came across in the blog sphere. I'm really happy with the way that they turned out!

Boy am I hooked--can't wait to play around with My Memories Digital Scrapbboking Software Suite some more! I haven't even gotten into how the software even offers features that allow you to add video and music to your pages--so many possibilities.

Summer Haze

Wow-what a summer it's been! I have been on the run with the kids for the past three months; hopping from one play date to pool date to quick weekend getaway after the other. Not that it hasn't been fun, but I am so ready for a change and hopefully a better routine for the kiddies as well as myself.

Although free time has been a rarity these days, I did manage to accomplish one personal goal this summer--to re-open my Etsy shop Indigo Wings. Yes, it's finally re-open although I have had little time to keep up with it. I'm hoping with September just around the corner and my little guy off to full day kindergarten I will finally have some time to invest in Etsy and blogging again.

I promise to have some regular updates from this time forward--especially with my favorite season almost upon us, Halloween!! Also, I have a giveaway in the works for the near future so please keep an eye out for that. For now, just sharing a few of the cards I've been working on lately.

Citrus Color Combo

I made this card a few weeks ago for a color challenge, but I could not find the time to finish it before the post date. Oh well, I still had a blast making it and love how it came out! I made my own glimmer mist from a recipe I found on U-Tube to coat the Tattered Angels chip board dragon fly and once again I used some scrumptious crinkled seam binding--my latest obsession!

Vintage Snowflake Garland Tutorial and an Announcement

Happy New Year! It's been awhile since I've updated my poor neglected blog. To say thank you to those of you who have continued to follow me I put together a tutorial to make a cute snowflake garland to brighten up your winter days.

Now that baby is nearly a year and my little guy is busy with pre-school I feel that I have that bit of space I needed to spread my creative wings again, and I am ready to share my creative journey with others of the same interest. To signify that return I felt it was time to start a new blog with a new focus, so when you have a chance please check out Vintage Haven Studio, I'd love to see you over there. I'll still be blogging about paper crafting and making handmade cards, but I also hope to write about my love of all things vintage and my passion for repurposing anything old into something completely new.

I'm not sure exactly what my plans are for IndigoWings, but I still may be posting here from time to time.

Now, about that tutorial. I was inspired to make this garland one day when I was crafting with my son. I love to sit down with him and take out the craft supplies and get all messy crafty. He's becoming quite the little artist himself. One day I realized I had never taught him to cut up paper to make it look like a snowflake; I loved making them myself as a kid. So we made snowflake after snowflake and one thing lead to another and I added this and added that and ended up with a cute banner to brighten up my kitchen.

The great thing about cutting out snowflakes yourself by hand, just like the real thing, is that not one of them is the same as the other.

To make your snowflake garland you will first need a sharp pair of scissors, a bone folder and two square pieces of paper of a thin quality preferably computer paper. Unfortunately, cardstock would be very difficult to cut for this project.
1. Fold the square piece of paper corner to corner to create a triangle half the size as your original square. Make sure to score the creases with your bone folder.

2. Then fold this triangle along its height to create a new triangle 4 layers thick.

3. Take one of your lower corners and fold it 60 degrees across the base of the triangle. Now fold the remaining corner of the triangle to line up with the other edge and snip off the two tails at the end of the triangle.

Now you’re ready to cut like crazy!

I started with a 7 inch square paper to make a larger snowflake and then a 5 inch square paper for a smaller snowflake which I then layered. I added lots of distress ink to my snowflakes to give them their aged look.

I finished it off with a paper rosette and a die cut vintage beauty that I highlighted with a ring of glass glitter to add to her vintage charm. I then attached my three snowflakes to a piece of satin ribbon.

Here's a tip if you are not happy using plane computer paper for your flakes. Find a piece of patterned paper that you love and scan it into your computer. Then go ahead and print it out on computer paper to add a pattern to you lighter weight paper that can then be easily cut into a snowflake.

Long Time No Blog

It's certainly hard to believe that the last time I posted on this blog was sometime in mid- February, snow was covering the ground and I was just about done with my pregnancy. Since then, so much has taken place, the Spring has returned, the flowers are blooming and we have all been adjusting to life with a new baby.

My little guy absolutely adores his baby sister, but there has still been a bit of a rocky adjustment period we have had to survive and which we are still working on from time to time. It's hard to go from being the one and only to the older more seemingly responsible sibling. He's also always looking for a playmate and sometime has a hard time understanding that the little one is not quite ready to join him in his games. Things are getting better though and we have all been settling into our new routine nicely.

We are enjoying the spring like weather immensely and can't get enough of the outdoors. I love to walk around in the yard and see what new flower or plant has decided to poke it's head out for all to see. Lately I have been enjoying the Lilacs, my favorites. It's hard to decide what I like best about them; their beautiful color and delicate blooms or that amazing aroma they give off.

Hubby had a birthday recently, and we had a quiet and relaxed celebration at home. My little guy and I baked him a cake and we ordered take out sushi and opened presents. Because I knew that with the arrival of our little one I would not have any time for crafting, I actually made a birthday card for my hubby a few weeks before baby's arrival. He was a bit impressed that I put so much thought into his birthday weeks before time. What can I say, I'm that kind of a girl.

Another exciting project that has been stirring some buzz around the house is our new outdoor play set. We thought it was the right time to upgrade our play area with the arrival of our second child, of course big brother was all for it.

It took my hubby and my Dad three days to put this set together, a real beast of a project but well worth it!

Our little one is now two months old, but things are still far from getting back to normal around here. I'm trying to enjoy it the best as I can, because everyday with the baby is a precious gift, or at least I try to remind myself of that at 3am feedings.

I'm hoping that soon I'll be able to get my craft on again, but for now I'm enjoying browsing through all the other beautiful card creations out there and reading all of my favorite blogs.

Baby Days

It's hard to believe, but it's just a matter of days now before our little baby girl makes her grand appearance into this world. I think I'm as ready as I can be for this big change in our daily lives--of course when there are babies there are always surprises; Will she be a good sleeper?; Will feedings go well?; How will my little guy adjust to becoming a big brother? I will have the answers to all of these questions soon enough.

Since I've had baby on the brain I really had an urge to get out my Papertrey Ink Bitty Baby Blessings stamp set and create some adorable baby cards. I've also been hording a few paper collections that I thought would work well with the set. As it turns out, Betsy Veldman has put a challenge up on her blog Paper, Scissors and Superheroes featuring one of my favorite techniques; paper piecing. I knew that this particular stamp set would work well for the challenge.

Babies are Heaven Sent Handmade Card

Betsy's cards are amazing, and she is definitely one of the designers that I turn to for inspiration time and time again. The things I love best about her work are the way she combines many different layers of patterns and textures into each work, her eye for detail and her amazing color combos. When you have a chance you need to pop over to her blog to see her beautiful work for yourself.

I really like the way this little guy turned out, looks just like a stuffed patchwork bunny perfect for a little girl to love. I just recently picked up an adorable stuffed bunny made by Bunnies By the Bay. She's soft and pink and her name is Petal and she'll make a perfect gift for my little guy to give to his baby sister. He's so pleased with it and he told me he can't wait to give it to the baby. He's getting a brand new Geo Trax train set from his new sister-- boy is he going to love her for that!

Just because I'm about to have a baby girl doesn't mean I've forgotten how precious our little baby boys are too. I love the color combination used in this Stampin' Up paper, these are the exact colors I used when I was decorating for my little guys room three years ago. I believe this particular collection was featured in Stampin' Up's 2009 Sale-A-Bration catalog.

This card was made using papers from Basic Grey's Porcelain collection. I love the shabby chic feel it lends to the design and how the old fashioned Baby pram enhances that timeless feel.

Sweet Little Baby Boy Handmade Card

This card was made with my son in mind. Back then when I was a first time mother I had not yet discovered my love for paper crafting, but it's never too late to turn to the past for inspiration. When my son was a wee dumpling I used to love watching him crawl around in nothing but a onesie. His legs were so chubby and delicious! It's hard to believe he is now three and such a big boy. Oh, how I love a baby in a onesie--but we'll be back to those days soon enough.

I Heart Vintage

I really do love vintage--anything shabby, distressed, antiqued, nostalgic truly speaks to me. For a long time I used to clip out vintage style images from magazines or save them on my hard drive just because I loved them so much. Then one day, about a year and a half ago I was suddenly struck by the idea to make my own greeting cards featuring vintage images--imagine my surprise when I soon there after discovered that there was a whole community of crafters doing the same thing! There's a famous quote from the author C.S. Lewis which is " We read to know that we are not alone", I truly believe that we create art for the very same reason.

Melissa Phillips has once again picked out a beautiful inspiration piece for all of her blog readers to play along with. I just couldn't resist once again creating my own card based around this photo.

One of the main reasons I love her design challenges is simply for the reason that it's not actually a contest. I think one of the reasons I've slowed down on participating in sketch challenges is because I found I was compromising my style in order to suit the challenge, and that really wasn't any fun for me. Now I know most of the time the cards I create based on the inspiration pieces are very loose interpretations, but that suites me fine. I love to see where the inspiration will take my creation and it's wonderful to know that the seed was planted by one particular image.

I normally love to include a sentiment on the front of my cards and leave the inside blank. Since I felt that a sentiment would over crowd the front of this card I went ahead and finished off the inside with a sentiment this time.

Wedding Card Challenge

If you are interested in a shot at having one of your own card creations published in a magazine then check out the latest challenge over at the Caardvarks blog. They have partnered up with the amazing CARDS magazine and the winner will be featured in one of their publications.

When I saw this challenge I thought why not! I just got this great Congratulations sentiment stamp from Stampin' Up! and I thought this challenge would be a perfect opportunity to put it to use. Also, we have a family wedding coming up in August, and I just found out our children will also be invited which means we will definitely be able to attend. So now that our babysitting issues have been resolved I thought, great--now I can make a card!

Just wanted to share a quick pic with you of yesterday's snow fall. I stuck my head out of our side door to get this picture and that's about as close as I got to the snow. At nine months pregnant I know that my big belly and the slippery side walk should never be introduced. But I must say, as messy as the snow is and will be for the days to come it certainly was a beautiful snow fall.

Moxie Fab World's Tuesday Trigger; Patch-Work Hearts

Yet another fabulous piece of inspiration from the Moxie Fab World blog.

This one was a bit tougher for me to wrap my head around, but once I decided on using papers from Basic Grey's June Bug collection my design quickly fell into place.

I've been hoarding these papers for way too long and have been dying to use them on a project. They are such a mix of fun and quirky patterns and colors, perfect for any patch-work inspired piece.

Let Your Heart Take Flight; Handmade Valentine's Embelishments

I mentioned a few blog posts ago how I love to use found objects to create my own embellishments for my cards. There are definitely an assortment of amazing products out there to use, and I have, but there is definitely something very satisfying and fun to flexing your creative muscle and coming up with your own.

The first card I would like to share was made with mainly papers and embellishments from K & Company's Madeline Collection. I just love the shabby chic feel to this line and how it all comes together on this card.

This adorable heart with butterfly wings really lends to the shabby chic appeal of this card and it was so much fun to make! The wings are made of chip board which I covered with a page from a vintage French book using Modge Podge. After the Modge Podge dried I distressed the pages a bit further using Ranger's distress inks and then I applied a layer of clear embossing powder to add a bit of shine. I then layered two material hearts and a vintage button and attached them to the wings. The hearts, button and pink seam binding were all Etsy finds, such a wonderful source for unique and interesting materials for all of your crafting needs.

This second card was made with papers from Making Memories, ribbon from Stampin' Up and a piece of black damask paper that I found via an Internet source over a year ago. I have it saved as a digital file on my computer and whenever I need a great piece of damask it's ready and waiting to be printed out and used.

This heart embellishment was made using Tim Holtz's Grunge board which I then painted with Ranger's distress crackle paint in brick. I love the way this paint dries. The thicker the coat you apply the more cracks appear. The wings, also grunge board, were first painted with a cream colored acrylic paint and then glitter was applied with heat and stick powder. I have to say that I really like the way this sweet little winged heart pops out against the black, red and white background.

It's Feb. 1st and Love is In The Air

It is so hard to believe that it's the 1st of February.; just two weeks until Valentine's day and any day now until the newest addition to our family will be making her grand entrance into the world. So many things to be grateful and excited for.

I just wanted to share with you yet another card created from a scrumptious piece of inspiration provided by Melissa Phillips' via her blog LilyBean's Paperie. This is the second such design inspiration that Melissa has offered her blog followers. Although I did create a card for her last challenge, for some reason my link never showed up on her blog. If you'd like to take a peak at that last one here's the link for you; An Eclectic Bit of Inspiration .

When I first saw this week's inspiration photo I thought red, white and kraft and I knew I had just the right Valentine's day card.

How perfect does this paper line from Making Memories coordinate with those requirements? Although this collection is from last year, it's new to me and I had such fun creating with it. In fact, I think it was my favorite for V-day crafting--so simple, but classic and versatile.

Also, just one more vintage die cut image that I couldn't resist. And how adorable does this little red-head look sitting up top of that Valentine heart and lace doily--just precious.

An Eclectic Bit of Inspiration

I have another card to share today that was inspired by a beautiful photograph that was posted on Melissa Phillips' blog LilyBean's Paperie. If you have never been, then you should immediately click over to check out Melissa's blog. She is truly an amazing artist and her creations have been a huge inspirational source for me ever since I started my own journey with this craft. Something about her style speaks to me on a very personal level--the layers, the textures--the chic, yet shabby elements--all work so well together to create little delicate morsels of eye candy!

I love the soft and delicate colors depicted in the inspiration photo. I also loved the texture of the beaded buttons that are scattered throughout the picture. I started thinking of chunky glitter, a bit of embossing for texture,browns and lavenders with a touch of pink and possibly a sprinkling of copper pigment ink.

As soon as I saw the embroidered slippers I knew that I had the perfect piece of patterned paper to use, from My Mind's Eye's Quite Smitten collection--an older collection, but relatively new to me. I also used patterned papers from Basic Grey's Bittersweet collection. The card stock, stamps and ribbon are all from Papertrey Ink.

I was also very much inspired by the vintage image I used for this card. I usually have a pile of just such images near my craft space and slowly work my way through them. This one was next and I just thought it would work so well with the rest of this card's concept. Also, as soon as I saw this image I knew I wanted to use it for a special card for the special guy in my life, my hubby. Now I'm nearly set for Valentine's day, just a quick stop for a few sweets and I'm all set for happy hearts day!

Moxie Fab World's Tuesday Trigger; I Feel Pretty in Turquoise and Gold

Another fabulous Tuesday Trigger over at the Moxie Fab World Blog, I just can't resist playing along. I have to say this color combo is just gorgeous! Turquoise is the new "it" color for 2010 so I'm sure we will be seeing more and more of it in designs, magazine layouts and hopefully in the paper crafting world.

I also love participating in these challenges because it gives me a chance to stretch my creative muscles and step out of my comfort zone a bit. Although I'm happy with the way this card turned out, it is so different than my typical style. Thanks for the opportunity to think a bit more outside of the box Moxie Fab World!

The glittery button used as an embellishment on this card is actually a rummage sale find I recently made. I love finding non-product type embellishments to use on my cards and rummage sales are always a treasure trove for just such trinkets. Another great source is Etsy. I'm planning on blogging about a few cards that I recently made using embellishments I purchased from Etsy and embellishments I made myself, so stay tuned for that soon.

A Valentine From Start to Finish

Here I go again with the pink and blue. This time the pink is Raspberry Fizz from Papertrey Ink, a striking hot pink shade. The patterned paper is from a collection from Stampin' Up.

Since my vintage image takes up most of the front of this card and the patterns I chose are a bit busy, I felt I would be cluttering the design if I tried to squeeze in a sentiment. Normally, I always try to include a sentiment and leave the inside of the card blank. I mostly do this for my Etsy shop customers who prefer to personalize the cards with their own unique message. But this time I decided to switch things up a bit, since I couldn't fit the sentiment on the front, and include one on the inside. It also gave me a chance to use Papertrey Ink's set Heartfelt Sentiments, a set with some truly moving and inspiring sentiment stamps.

A Yummy Color Combo

This is a color combo I just can't seem to get enough of this Valentine's season, blue and pink. These two cards featured today were actually made using aqua mist card stock from Papertrey Ink and various pale pink patterned papers.

Getting Ready For Valentine's Day

I love the months October through February because, although busy, the holiday's make everything so much fun. This year I managed to create a lot of holiday projects. I also feel that I really found my niche creatively as I was very inspired by the holidays and even sold a lot of my holiday creations in my Etsy shop. So I am happy to say that I have been busy putting together some really fun Valentine's day cards. It's perfect timing too, because as I finish up for Valentine's day and get ready for my new baby--I feel a real sense of satisfaction at having had the opportunity to accomplish what I have done creatively over the past year.

Let it Snow...Just a Little

Moxie Fab World's Tuesday Trigger

I couldn't resist playing along again with the design challenge over at the Moxie Fab World blog. I do really love the image of the room that was picked for this weeks trigger and also, the implication of warmer days to come and the easy living that it brings to mind.

I think that the main thing that inspired me to jump into this one was that I would get to use my favorite Papertrey Ink card stock color, Aqua Mist. Luckily, I just had a few scraps left to finish off this card. I am expecting a new supply from Papertrey any day now, along with a bunch of other goodies. I plan on creating a partner for this card and will offer it as a set in my Etsy shop soon.

It's About Time

Just a quick post today to share a few recent card creations.

A Sense of Time Handmade Card

I believe I was inspired by the New Year to use this clock stamp image, but I think the sentiments are ones that I will use again and again, especially on the second card. That's a saying that will be great to meditate on when life seems to get overwhelming--I might have to tack that one to the fridge so I'll be reminded to do that everyday.

I hope everyone is enjoying their New Year so far. It has been very cold here in central New Jersey and I have been feeling a bit under the weather. It's sad to say, but unfortunately true, I have yet to leave my house this year!

Well, tomorrow my husband returns to work after a great two weeks off for the holidays and things will be going back to normal around here. He has been so helpful the entire time that he has been home, doing the food shopping and occupying our little guy so that I can rest, I do believe I've been spoiled!

What a Difference A Year Makes

I'm sure like most of you, I find that the eve of the New Year is always a time to reflect on the challenges and accomplishes of the year before. I usually do make a list of resolutions each year, wither I actually stick to them or not. I just find that it helps me to clear away the old and prepare to focus on the new. This year I am not going to do that.

I know this year is going to start off slow and then skyrocket with the arrival of our new baby in February. The one thing that is a guarantee for the new year is that it will be an exciting and hectic one. I am preparing to set aside my own needs and focus entirely on my family. That's just what I have to do right now, even if it means that I will not have any time for creating cards or blogging--those things will always be there in the near future.

2009 was the year of being tired--yes, I hate to sound negative--but that is how I will always remember the close of this decade. Not that all of us mom's are not tired all of the time, I'm just resolved that that is one of the characteristics of the job. This year was a bit more tiring for me as I started it out working as a substitute teacher, a part time job but a very stressful one at that. We survived an entire kitchen re-modeling project that turned our house on it's head for four months. And now as the year ends my pregnancy is slowing me down more and more as my husband works faster and faster to get a new bathroom installed before the arrival of the baby.

I hope I don't sound like I'm complaining--each one of those things, although tiring, are real blessings. But if I could make one resolution for this year it would be to take care of myself a bit more--focus on my own health and overall well being. Another luxurious fantasy in the life of every mom.

2009 was also a year of discoveries. My little guy makes them every day as he grows and matures into the person he will one day be--I get to experience all of those new discoveries right along with him. I also discovered my own artistic style and a real sense of satisfaction as an artist--a life time goal that I'm so pleased I finally had the chance to experience. Although I am very uncertain about where my art will take me in 2010 I know I will always cherish the time I did have to create my cards and to share them with everyone.

Recently I re-created a card celebrating the New Year that I made last year. The first image is one of the very first cards I created as I started this journey of discovery.

The second image is the card I recently made using the same sentiment and stamped image. It's a real testament to me of how my own style has grown and developed over the last year.

Well, thanks for all of your support and comments here on my blog and for tolerating my new years ponderings. Wishing everyone a very happy 2010; may you find satisfaction as you reflect on the previous year and success in achieving those that you set for yourself for the year ahead--never stop growing.

Moxie Fab World's Tuesday Trigger: Black & White with a hint of Green

I thought it would be fun to play along with the Moxie Fab World Blog's Tuesday trigger for this week.

Here's a simple card featuring a damask patterned strip and a bit of green flowers. Every once in a while I like to keep it simple. What was really fun about this card is that I used all non-paper crafting products to make it. I love taking things that might not necessarily be made for crafting and create something new with them. The damask patterned strip is from a pack of file folders that I found in the dollar bin at Michael's and the letter pressed green flowers where actually an image from the invitation to the engagement party.

The second card is a bit more complex--going back to my usual cluttered and shabby style. I've been wanting to use this pear stamp image for awhile and thought this was a perfect project for it. Unfortunately, the picture isn't the best. My digital camera died on me last night, I was so sad. Luckily it is still under warranty, but just until the end of this month--it was a Christmas present last year. I sent it back to Canon today and am keeping my fingers crossed that they will fix it for me. In the mean while I am forced to use our older camera, which isn't ideal. I feel really lost without my camera.

Merry Christmas to All

Just a quick post today to wish everyone a happy holiday!

Although this has been an exceptionally hectic December, and my pregnancy really slowed me down, I did enjoy myself and the moments I shared with friends and family.

Last night after dinner my hubby, little guy and myself ventured out in the cold to visit a local holiday sight, which we affectionately call "the Christmas house". Our little guy loved it--and it was a great way to start off our holiday celebrations.

Also, I have been enjoying all of my holiday crafting. I am especially pleased with this set of vintage inspired Santa cards that I just finished up. I used papers from Making Memories most recent Christmas collection to make these cards, which is such a fun one. I love the traditional colors and fun patterns they chose for the papers.

Holiday Party Time

Wow-what a day we had yesterday! My little guy and myself were party hoping all afternoon.

We started in the afternoon with my little guy's pre-school party. I was one of the class mom's for that so I got to stay and help for the entire party. It was my first chance to see how my little guy interacts with his teachers and fellow class mates. He was so happy to see me in his class room he introduced me to all his friends, "that's my mommy!" It was one of those moments that all of us mom's live for.

I put together a special gift for each of my little guy's teachers. Just a little note pad folio with a special sentiment and a matching pen. They were fun to make and didn't take too much time to do. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to make a few more to list in my Etsy shop soon.

After wrapping up his school holiday party we headed over to our Mom's club party. By this time my little guy was all jacked up on sugar and had not had a nap, so needless to say I was on major meltdown watch.

My little guy was over the moon when Santa made an appearance at the party. He went up to Santa for at least three hugs and then even sat on his lap to tell him once again what he wants for Christmas. After Santa left he turned to me and said, " Oh no, I forgot to give Santa a big hug and a kiss by by." Can't blame the kid, Santa is irresistible.

Well, only two more days until the big day. I hope everyone finds some time to relax and enjoy the season. I'm off to bake gingerbread cookies and cupcakes today-- and then finally, I think I will be able to relax.

Snow Day

Saturday morning-5am, not a drop of snow in sight. Well, just to be on the safe side I decide to run over to Kohl's to return something and to buy my little guy a pair of gloves, the one essential piece of snow gear I had left to pick up--just in case. By the time I make it to Kohl's and Shoprite (6am) and then back home again by 7:15 the snow was already coming down and sticking--this was certainly going to be a big one!

Although our plans to take the little guy on a Santa train ride had to be cancelled, he was more than delighted to stay home and play in the snow.

My hubby took him outside to help him build his first snowman. It had to be a tiny one because the snow wasn't sticky enough, but he still loved it!

Santa decided to make an early stop at our house to deliver the perfect present for a snowy day, a new sled!

I hope everyone enjoyed their day and took the opportunity to get some things done at home or to just relax.

Christmas is Certaintly Sneaking Up on Us

Wow--I can't believe it's just 8 days until Christmas! Well, I am officially done with my Christmas shopping, finally got my Christmas cards out--late, but better than never and I only have two presents left to wrap. Now I just have to make it through Dec. 22nd when I'm one of the class mom's for my son's Christmas party and then directly after that we're heading to the Mom's Club Christmas party. Should be a fun day, but when your 7 months pregnant it's also quite exhausting. I know my little guy will have a blast though, so it makes it all worth it.

I had a pleasant surprise the other morning when I received a blog award from my good friend Melissa (A.K.A Kathia) from Pink Little Cake. Melissa is an amazing and creative baker and not only are we blog friends, but we've been friends in real life for quite a long time now. I'm so fortunate to have her and her daughter in our lives--my little guy is crazy about her cutie pie daughter too and they play so well together. When you have a chance take a peek at the beautiful Pirate themed Birthday cake she made for my son's 3rd Birthday party.

I hope everyone is enjoying this holiday season. Although this time of year can be hectic and crazy, it is still such a special time to enjoy with friends and family--so try not to loose sight of that.

The Most Wonderful Time of The Year

Yes, I definitely have to agree that the holiday season is the best time of the year, although it is a crazy and hectic one as well.

We finally have a Christmas tree and it's lit up and decorated! My little guy is super excited this year about Christmas--it's adorable and exhausting at the same time. The day we decorated the tree he had to be in the middle of everything--waiting with anticipation to see what would be the next treasure pulled out of the over sized rubber-made storage box. Very cute, but did I mention exhausting too...

When it comes to holiday crafting I find that I have been obsessed with winter birds. It all started with cardinals. I just love their majestic red feathers and especially how their vibrant color contrasts against the bare winter landscape. They are one of natures most stunning ornaments.

This fixation with winter birds actually started last year when I created two sets of paper birds to decorate my Christmas tree.

This year I decided to create a whole series of Christmas cards based on my love of these birds and my fascination with the natural and rustic elements of the season. I used a winter birds stamp set from Inkadinkado along with card stock from Paper trey Ink and patterned papers from Basic grey to create these cards.

My Autumn Creations and a Giveaway

Well, most of the leaves have fallen from the trees and the Autumn season is almost behind us, but I have to say that this was one of the most beautiful Falls we have had in Central Jersey for quite some time. I really enjoyed going for long walks and collecting leaves with my little guy this year.

I certainly find this season inspiring too. Here are a few of the cards I created in celebration of Autumn. I am also thankful to say that all of these cards were sold in my Etsy shop.

Halloween--you will be missed

Well, another Halloween has come and gone. October was such a fun month, definitely one of my favorite times of the year. Now Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner, and it's hard to believe--but 2010 will be here soon enough.

My little guy really enjoyed trick-or-treating this year. First off, he did a great job at answering the door with his daddy and handing out candy. Those trick-or-treaters must have been happy because he nearly gave away half the bowl in one shot!

Later on that evening when my hubby and I took him out for some trick-or-treat fun he turned around and said to me "Mommy this is so much fun!" He really had a blast and I bet he can't wait until next year.

Thankfully the weather managed to hold out long enough for us to take in a bit of the fun festivities are town had planned out.

The Cirque-o-ween did not disappoint...

Everyone, children and adults alike, were decked out for the occasion..

and the house of 100+ Jack O'Lanterns certainly brightened up the night..

Take a Walk Through Town with Me...

Small town America is alive and well in my home town, Bordentown City, NJ. It's a tiny little square mile of a town--and so easy to walk, even with a toddler and 6 months into my pregnancy. I especially love to walk through my town at this time of year and take in all of the holiday decorations. This time I decided to take my camera with me...

We are very fortunate to live in a town that really makes Halloween special. I can't wait to take my little guy over to Thomas Street. Every year they shut down the whole street and all the residents take part in making it an unforgettable Halloween experience. One house in particular goes all out and sets up a stage on their front lawn; the show starts at 8! This years theme, Cirque-O-Ween--a fantastical Halloween Circus spook-tacular. Every year they change it up and the whole block gets in on it--some of their previous themes were witches, pirates and aliens--on my! On our walk today I managed to snap a few shots of some of the decorations and got a preview of what to expect on all Hallows eve.

This is definitely a sight worth checking out. This house has a couple of hundred Jack-O'Lanterns set up and ready to be lit up for Halloween night. I can't wait to see that again, it's amazing! My First Ever Tutorial; Halloween Spinner Card

Here is a little project I've been working on and I thought it would be fun to share it, step by step. I've noticed that I have a few new blog followers, so I thought this would be a great way to share a little bit more of what I do and a way to say thanks for your support and that I really appreciate it.

Before I begin I think it is fare to warn you that first, this is my very first tutorial, and second, I'm not such a technique girl--more of a fly by the seat of my pants kind of crafter--but it's kind of hard to come up with a tutorial outlining my chaotic creative process. So please bear with me on this if I miss a vital ingredient.

First, the finished product--it's always good to start off knowing what you will be creating.

2. The stamps I chose to use for this card were the real inspiration for it. I thought that these adorably spooky Halloween characters would be perfect for a spinner card. To add a bit more detail to the images I chose to use some MarvyUchida markers to color them in.
**After coloring them I stamped them onto two pre-cut circles. I only did it this way because I already had the circles cut from a previous project, do yourselves a favor and stamp first, then cut with the appropriately sized circle cutting tool--much easier that way.

3. The finished stamped image.

4. Here are some of the materials I used for this card; I chose papers from Cosmo Cricket's Haunted Collection cut into strips, Bazzill card stock, a hounds tooth background stamp from Hero Arts and a die cut scalloped circle frame from my Slice Machine's basic shapes design card. I chose a piece of Orange Bazzill textured card stock for the card base; this piece measures 5"x 4.5"
**The brown piece of card stock pictured is a piece of scrap paper that I used to attatch the actual card layout to. This is an important step because you will need to sandwich in the spinner, so think of the pieced layer as the top slice of a sandwich.

5. Here is the finished paper pieced layer, now we need to cut the first circle.

6. Mark with a pencil the center point for where you want to cut your circle. I chose to frame my circle with a scalloped boarder, but that is just a design choice I decided to throw in and is not necessary. Also, I off centered the circle so that I could write my message on the left hand side of the inside of the card.
**You can use a circle punch to punch out your circle or a Coluzzle cutting tool, or any other tool you might use to cut a circle. Just make sure that the circle opening you cut is at least 1/8th of an inch bigger than the stamped circle piece (ex. If your stamped circle piece measures 1"1/4, then your circle opening should measure 1" 3/8). This is important, otherwise your spinner will not hang suspended.

7. Now it's time to add the string; I used black embroidery thread because I had it on hand. You can also use plain old ordinary dental floss, which you could first color in black with some ink or a marker.

* Add a piece of double sided tape to the back of one of the stamped images, sticky strip would work best for this step. It;s important to make sure your stamped image is lined up straight before you add the string or otherwise you'll have an off balanced image.

* Next, add another piece of sticky strip to the top of the string and add the second stamped piece to sandwich in the string.

8. Next, cut a co-ordinating circle opening in the orange card base. This opening needs to be the same size as the first cut circle opening on the paper pieced panel (i.e. 1"3/8).

9. Finally, adhere the front panel to the card base creating sandwiching your spinner in between the two pieces.

And there it is a Halloween spinner card. Of course, you can use any stamped image and design layout to make a card like this, just make sure you have fun.

My Latest Edition to Etsy; Retro Inspired Halloween Notecards

Just wanted to share a few pics. of my latest project; three new sets of Halloween note cards that are already up in my Etsy shop IndigoWings. They would also make perfect invitations for a Halloween party or dinner.

I had so much fun making these sets. I just love how well the retro style die cut images play off the classic orange and black Halloween color scheme.

These two little characters are too cute. Although they resemble classic die cut Halloween decorations, I think they may be originals to this specific paper collection.

All of the papers used and most of the embellishments are from last years Martha Stewart Halloween paper collection. My opinion on Martha's craft supplies typically wavers between excellent to not so much. I particularly love these papers and the vintage feel they lend to any project and I also love her craft boarder punches--although they can be temperamental. Her glitter is great, but her ink pads leave something to be desired. Last year I bought a bunch of her Halloween rubber stamps--they were so very cute with a real vintage vibe, but they didn't stamp well at all so I past them on to a fellow crafter whom I'm hoping put them to better use than I did. Well, enough about Martha...I promise.

Since I am a complete Internet junkie these days, I find myself often searching for something fun and inspiring via the Internet. I thought I should share some of those fines here tonight.

Just a few photos that I swiped from Marthastewartliving.com. Love her or hate her, either way you've got to admit Martha is on to something. I've heard her called a domestic goddess, but I think of her as a domestic artist. She has a way of taking the most ordinary things and turning them into remarkable things of beauty. Halloween is also one of her favorite holidays, so at this time of the year her web site is a treasure trove of Halloween inspiration. Just have a look at what this women (or I should say her staff) can do with a pumpkin...

A Fun and Festive Weekend

Sunday was a beautiful day in Central New Jersey and we spent the day at a local farm for apple and pumpkin picking. It was my little guy's first time going Pumpkin Picking and he had a blast. He really loved the hayride out to the field. Tractors are probably one of his most favorite things in the whole world, so he really got a kick looking at all the tractors pulling the wagons.

I also found a pocket of free time to decorate my own house for the holiday and work on a few Halloween card sets for my Etsy shop. I'll be blogging a bit more about those card sets tomorrow, but just wanted to leave you with a sneak peak at them.

"Take a walk when autumn comes to town"

I find this time of year so inspiring; the colors of the changing foliage and the decorations on the houses and in the stores. One other constant source of inspiration for me are the various magazine publications dedicated to Halloween and seasonal decorating.

Good housekeeping's October issue includes a beautiful photographic spread featuring black & white Halloween decorations. I really love this color combination for Halloween and have been seeing it pop up more than ever this year. I think I'm going to have to do a black and white series of Halloween cards before the month is through.

I just love this front porch, particularly because they use a lot of natural elements in their decorating; twigs from the yard above the door, a twig wreath painted black and lots and lots of pumpkins. I really love the pumpkin lantern configurations that are displayed on each side of the door, eerie yet elegant.

How about this Halloween spread. The vase of spray-painted black flowers and the table cloth of ripped cheesecloth is the perfect centerpiece for any frightful feast.

The black creepie crawlies and white decorative accents, along with pops of orange make for a terrifyingly terrific treats table.

A troupe of pumpkin people make a spectacular welcoming committee for any Halloween feast and perfectly captures the holiday spirit.

I love both of the displays shown pictured on this page. The bevy of bats fluttering from the black spray-painted branches are a perfect addition to this Halloween decor. The mantel piece below is the perfect mix of sinister and sweet; ghostly white painted pumpkins spelling out a frightful message, black candlesticks and black painted ivy.

Well, I will definitely be bringing this page of inspiration to life in my own home this holiday season.

There's a Chill In The Air...

... and Autumn is upon us. I really love this weather and am so ready for the foliage to turn. As I venture out I do notice some people dressed in shorts and sandals in a desperate attempt to hold onto summer--but not me. I'm sporting a pair of jeans and a cozy sweater.

Oh Halloween Tree

Here's a Halloween decorating idea that I just love--the Halloween tree. Although I have yet to get one of these for my own home, it's something I definitely plan on doing in the near future.

A constant source of inspiration for me are the many amazing photo streams of other artist that I have found on flickr. Lately, I have been spending some time browsing all of the wonderful works that are included in many of the Halloween inspired groups on flickr. Some of the groups feature original art works, while others showcase beloved and vintage Halloween decoration. I have marked many favorites and that is where I discovered these amazing Halloween tree images.

I especially love the vintage feel of these feather trees and the fact that they are painted black just adds that much more to the sinister scene. What a perfect center piece to your Halloween decor.

The 31 Days of Halloween

I am so happy because today is October 1st and that means only 30 more days until my favorite holiday--Halloween. In anticipation of the big day I have been busily crafting Halloween cards and I have been having a ball making them.

Although I have been listing my creations in my Etsy shop IndigoWings, I feel like I have to let a little part of myself go every time I sell one. I've really been putting a lot of my heart and soul into my recent creations. But I am definitely happy that others find enjoyment from them as well.

Here are a few that recently left my shop;

All of these cards were made with papers and embellishments from Cosmo Cricket's Haunted collection. I also used some digital images of vintage text that I found on Flickr.

In honor of my favorite holiday, I plan on dedicating as many blog posts as I can to Halloween counting down to the big day. So stay tuned for more of my Halloween crafts, plus other frightfully delightful Halloween inspired goodies.

A Little Bit of Christmas

Just wanted to share a little bit of Christmas with you today, vintage Christmas actually.

OK- I know summer isn't officially over for a few more days but I am already in the holiday spirit. This is definitely my favorite time of the year, the weather is cooling down and Autumn is right around the corner, which means Halloween will be here soon and then Christmas; my two favorite holidays for family and for crafting.
I really love this vintage style, especially for Christmas cards. There is something very nostalgic about it. It reminds me of all those beautiful antique glass Christmas tree ornaments that sparkle so beautifully in the Christmas tree's lights. My mom always has a bunch of those ornaments in her tree, they were actually from her own childhood tree. She's also a big fan of vintage Christmas and even uses some wonderful bubble lights to decorate her tree, because they also remind her of her childhood Christmas'.

When it comes down to it, that's what Christmas is all about--children and childhood memories. When we have children in our lives Christmas takes on a whole new meaning again and we get to re-live our own wonderful memories of Christmas through the eyes of our children. This past Christmas was exceptionally special for me because I got to experience it through my 2 year old sons excitement and unfaltering belief in Santa. Can't wait for this year again!

One of my favorite things to do when making vintage inspired cards is to use old photographs. I just love this image of this little lady sitting next to her beautiful Bristol feather Christmas tree. I would love to find one just like it to decorate my own home for the holidays. Maybe then I could snag one of my mom's antique glass ornaments to complete that authentic vintage look.

Christmas isn't the only holiday I've been getting ready for, I've also been getting a jump start on Halloween. I've been updating my Halloween shop in my Etsy store, IndigoWings, all week. I would love for you to check it out.

Teacher Appreciation Bookmark Cards

I just wanted to share my latest edition to my Etsy shop IndigoWings. I've spent the last few days completing a new batch of my teacher appreciation bookmark cards. It was so much fun working with the Cosmo Cricket papers from their Early Bird collection. I've been coveting them ever since they were released mid year and have finally gotten my hands on them. I thought the bold and bright primary colors that they chose for this collection would work so well for my bookmark cards.

Custom Card Set Order

I recently made a custom card set order featuring the name of the customers blog. The cards can be used as thank yous for orders or for corresponding (snail mail style) with other blog friends.

I had a lot of fun with this request and was happy for the chance to take out some time and be creative and original. The set featured six individual note cards made with papers from gcd Studio's "Loverly" collection and six hand stamped envelopes.

Also, I launched a store on ArtFire today;http://www.artfire.com/users/IndigoWings. I will be offering the same types of items as I am in my Etsy shop, handmade cards and paper crafting supplies. Two advantages to ArtFire that I have already discovered are that you can list your items absolutely free of cost and there is a direct button to twitter on the page with your listing. What that means is that as soon as you list your item you can easily jump over to twitter and post a link and a blurb about it. Although I haven't gotten any sales yet, I've already gotten nearly half as many hits in a day on ArtFire compared to the number of hits for the past month on Etsy. It's true what I've heard about Twitter--it's an amazing marketing tool--I will definitely be spending more time exploring that option and it's potential in the near future.

Quite The Lazy Blogger

Wow- it's really been awhile since I managed to post on my blog. I was off to a really good start back in May when I was finally done with my part time teaching job and was really putting in an effort to blog and participate in card challenges. Seems like night and day when I think about then and now--but I have a really great excuse for being lazy. I am happy to say that my husband and I are expecting our second child! It's a very exciting time for us and we are so happy to welcome a new edition to our family.

I've spent the last month and a half sleeping away all of my free time though, but I am definitely not complaining about it, actually I'm really grateful to have the time during the day to rest as needed. I didn't have that opportunity when I was pregnant with my son and working a full time job and taking graduate courses at night--those were happy times too but exhausting.

Well, although I have slowed down considerably these days I find that my obsession with paper crafting has yet to subside. I'm trying to enjoy my hobby when I can because I know that soon enough I won't have enough free time to sneak in a shower let alone indulge in my hobby.

Being pregnant and dealing with the exhaustion and nausea has zapped my creativity a bit. One of the ways I was able to jump start it again was by spending time making cards with my friend Vicki who's a Stampin' Up demonstrator and the other ladies in her Card Club.

Vicki organized a stamping class at our public library that I have been participating in and I am now a member of her monthly card club. It's been so much fun; stamping, crafting and chatting with friends. Vicki comes up with some great designs for the cards that she has us make and I always come away having learned a new technique or two.

All the cards pictured here are one's that I've made recently with card club and just thought I would share them with you today for a little of your own inspiration. I've been working on a few other original projects too that I plan on sharing soon enough and watch out for a tutorial on how to make your own spinner card similar to the one pictured here;

Big News; My Latest Edition to my Etsy Shop

I have some really exciting news that I have been dying to share. Finally a long time wish of mine has been fulfilled, I am now carrying paper crafting supplies in my Etsy shop IndigoWings. I am so happy that I have managed to expand my shop in this way and can't wait to expand it even more to contain additional crafting materials and eventually card kits. But as they say, Rome wasn't built in a day and everything takes baby steps.

I will now be carrying scrap packs of two gcd Studio's paper collections to start; Loverly and Eye Candy. Although each of the collections is very different I think you will find that what they have in common is that they are beautifully made and are of a very high quality. I Heart Cosmo Cricket... and a GIVEAWAY!

One of my very favorite things about paper crafting is using beautiful and lush patterned paper in my projects. I have a few favorite companies that I find I go to over and over again for my paper fix, one of those is Cosmo Cricket. I have a ton of their paper and have even been fortunate enough to win paper and supplies from a few give aways on their blog; http://cosmocricket.typepad.com/cosmo_cricket/. I thought I would share a few of my favorite cards that I have made using Cosmo Cricket papers with you today.

I think what it is that really attracts me to Cosmo Cricket is their use of quirky color combos and bold patterns. I also love the eccentric design elements that they incorporate into their collections; for example one of my favorite collections is Mr. Campy and I just love the assortment of characters they came up with for their My Campy Adhesive Dye Cuts. Or another great example of their unique design sensibilities are the elements from the Early Bird Collection; the use of primary colors and the images of vintage toasters and other kitschy kitchen utensils is just superb.

There is just something about Cosmo Cricket's paper products that really appeals to my sense of humor. I'm sure if I ever had the chance to meet the Comstocks or Lindsay we would enjoy a few good laughs together. Family Fun Days

It certainly has been awhile since I've managed to get in a blog post. Actually, I haven't had much time for card making these days lately either. We've been having lots of family fun though and have actually started to enjoy our summer. Our camping trip went great, my little guy loved camping so much. I think we will make a nature lover out of him yet. We've also been spending time going blueberry picking and boating on our favorite reservoir. My hubby even snuck in some fishing and my little guy caught his first fish.

The highlight of the past week for me, and I'd have to say for the rest of my fam., was the time I spent with my little guy at a Mommy and me swim class. The lessons took place for an hour each day for five days and it was offered to children under the age of three. My little guy took to the water like a fish and had me completely amazed. Not only did he get over his fear of the water quickly, he was also jumping off the diving board into the deep water by the end of the week. I have to say I definitely had one of those parent moments where I was completely amazed by my kid and overwhelmingly proud of him.

It Certaintly is A Moxi Fab Day!

Wow-I just got some great news. My vintage inspired card was chosen as one of the winners of the most recent Moxi Fab World blog challenge; The Value of Vintage.

Although I submitted a few cards, it was this card that I made for my husband for our anniversary that was chosen. I guess that makes it even more special, since I made it for a special guy. Confessions of a Paper Fanatic

I just love patterned paper--simply adore it. So when I received two new paper packs from gcd Studio's I just had to immediately make some cards from them. Mind you, I managed to sneak these two cards in between entertaining my toddler and packing for a camping trip--thank goodness for nap time!

The first card was made with gcd Studio's Eye Candy collection. This collection includes bold patterns, clean flowing lines and a choice of eclectic colors.

This particular circle pattern reminded me so much of the patterns designers used during the Art Deco period, so I just couldn't resist pairing it with this vintage image I had stored on my C-drive. The great thing about gcd's card stock is that it is a thin grade and can easily pass through a computer printer. I quickly modified the image in Photoshop, cut a piece of card stock down to fit my printer and printed the image directly from my computer. I also based this card on Laura's sketch 28 on the 2S4U blog for this week's challenge.

The second card I would like to share was made with gcd's Loverly collection, with it's earthy tones which makes it perfect for Autumn--OK, I know we haven't even gotten through the summer yet, but I couldn't resist making another Thanksgiving card with this beautiful paper.

I also used some beautiful delicate lace that I recently purchased from an Etsy shop. I love Etsy so much, especially for finding affordable craft supplies. The great thing about Etsy too is that the shipping costs are usually very reasonable, and that's where you really save. This card was based on sketch 120 on the CPS blog for this week's challenge.

I am definitely now a fan of gcd's line of papers and am sure I'll find myself turning to that brand time and again. I also plan to list both of these cards in my Etsy shop Indigo Wings.

Thank you for stopping by my little corner of the Internet. I will be computer free, and most likely water logged, for the next three days as we head tonight to the Pocono Mountains for some camping. My little guy is very excited about his first camping trip, it's just too bad it's going to be such a wet one. Well, maybe the sun will decide to pay us a visit after all.

A Color Combo So Nice...I Used it Twice!

I just had so much fun playing with this color combo and creating my own patterned paper and flower embellishments on the two cards I have to share today.

The first card was based on the Card Patterns Blog Sketch # 19. The handmade flower embellishment was a technique I picked up from an on-line tutorial on the Studio Calico Blog.

I decided to use the same color combo and hand stamped patterned paper for the next card as well. I created the blue and green patterned paper by first stamping the damask design in kiwi kiss ink onto the aqua card stock, then I set that aside to let it dry. Once it was dry I stamped the French script with Versamark over the damask pattern and then heat embossed it with clear embossing powder.

I also heat embossed the patterns onto the die cut flowers, which I made using my Making Memories Slice machine.

Rainy Day Ramblings

A quick post before I turn in for the night.

It's been raining so much in NJ that it doesn't even feel like we are having a spring. Maybe that is why I have been thinking about the Fall lately, which is usually my second favorite season after Spring, but this year I'm hoping that the Fall will make up for this soggy Spring.

I've also wanted to try some embroidery stiching on my cards. I recently picked up some adorable templates, flourishes and curly cues, that can be punched onto cards with a paper piercer. Once they were pierced I was able to use a needle and embroidery thread to fill it in. I also learned a few things during the process, mainly that you need to use some kind of special embroidery needle--which I didn't have. The needle I did end up using left a few rips around the holes because it was way too big. Another lesson learned.

The second card is my submission for the current Moxi Fab World Challenge; Value of Vintage. I just love vintage and incorporating vintage images and embelishments into my cards, so this was one challenge I did not want to pass up.

1st Annual 2 Sketches 4 You Ultimate Card Showdown

Today is turning out to be a great day--OK, my son didn't take a nap, but I'm still feeling great! I just realized that this is my 50th blog post! That's a mini-milestone for sure. Also, I sold my first card from my Etsy shop--a moment I have been waiting for, sadly, for too long. I sold one of my teacher appreciation cards.

I am also very pleased because I finally found time last night to complete my card submission for the 1st Annual 2 Sketches 4 You Ultimate Card Showdown. Is that a great name for a contest or what? I love the idea of a bunch of crafty ladies, scissors in one hand and tape in the other, getting ready for the ultimate showdown.

I love the 2S4U blog and Laura and Kazan's card sketches are always amazing! They really put their hearts into it and it shows. I always feel that I get such wonderful and warm encouragement from all the ladies involved with that blog whenever I submit a card for a challenge. That's what keeps me coming back again and again.

Some of the supplies I used on this card are my very favorites; Papertrey Ink's Vintage Cream Cardstock and ribbon; The patterned paper is from Basicgrey's Wisteria Collection; The flower stamp is an acrylic stamp by Amy Butler for K & Company; and the sentiment is one of my favorites from Papertrey Ink's "Out on a Limb" sentiment set. I also used two of my favorite punches from Martha Stewart; Scalloped Lace and the Butterfly.

Dreaming With My Toes in the Sand...

... or rather dreaming of putting my toes in the sand, although it is not quite beach weather yet here in central NJ. It is a beautiful day, but still a bit chilly, at least for laying out by a pool or sitting on a beach.

The cards I have to share today definitely help to set off my daydreaming though. I made both of them for the color challenge on the Moxi Fab World Blog. The challenge was to use citrus colors of yellow and green. You can't get more Summer-ie (ok- THAT'S NOT ACTUALLY A WORD, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN) than this.

I really had fun with this and it helped to push me out of my comfort zone a bit. I might not have otherwise made a card using this color combo. Also, it worked out great because I had some great papers in my stash that were perfect--I had come by those papers after winning some blog candy a few months back. At the time I thought that they would be perfect to use in the Spring. It doesn't get better than that.

This first card was also based on sketch #118 at the Card Positioning System Blog. The card stock is from Papertrey Ink, as is the stamped sentiment. The patterned paper is from Making Memories and the other stamps are Amy Butler's from K & Company.

The second card was based on sketch # 17 at the Card Patterns Blog. All of the patterned papers used in this card are from Crate Paper and the sentiment is once again from the Out on a Limb sentiment set from Papertrey.

What a great way to start off the week, three challenges down and a lot of fun had putting them together. Now back to work, there is vacuuming and dish washing to get to.

Latest Edition to My Etsy Shop; Teacher Appreciation Cards

Just a quick post tonight. I wanted to share a few pictures of my latest editions to my Etsy shop; IndigoWings. They are all very similar to the cards that I recently made for my son's teachers.

The tags are actually magnets, so each one is a greeting and a gift.

The next one is actually a book mark card. I made a similar card a few months ago for a birthday and when someone saw it they gave me the idea that it would make a great card for a teacher-- so I put one and one together--and here it is.

Both the bookmark and the tag are attached to the cards with magnetic tape.

A Time for Reflection

Just a few cards to share this week. Since this was my first week back home since I stopped substitute teaching I actually had time to participate in Dawn McVey's weekly color challenge. I admire Dawn's work so much and her blog, My Favorite Things, is always such a great source of inspiration. It's really worth checking out.

I also based this card on sketch #15 at the Card Patterns Blog.

The sentiment on the card is from Papertrey Ink's Out on a Limb Sentiment set. I love this set for cards. The sayings are so meaningful and reflective.

I guess I am feeling a bit reflective myself as I start yet another new role,although stay-at-home-mom is not exactly a new one for me--I definitely feel as if I have to start fresh. I've already started to check off some of the things on my 'to do' list--cleaning out closets and organizing, those kinds of things, as well as thinking and planning what I would like to achieve for myself over the next few months--spending more time with family and friends , participating in more card challenges and making more time to craft.

It's also my birthday this week--yet another reason to prioritize and reflect. Although I have a lot of plans for my son for the upcoming months, I also need to make a bit more time for myself. I already started by getting out of the house on Monday night to make a yoga class at the gym. That was one of the best birthday presents I could have given myself, not only did my body feel great my mind felt completely rested. I guess, like many women out there, I put a lot of pressure on myself to do everything and be everything--a wife, mom, friend, daughter--and although all those things are wonderful, it's important to do something for yourself now and again.

The sentiment on the second card is also from that same Papertrey Ink set.

Happy Mother's Day

Mother's Day--what a wonderful day to celebrate. I feel so fortunate to be a mom, although it is one of the hardest jobs that anyone could ask for, there are so many wonderful rewards that go along with it.

I spent a wonderful morning with my little guy and hubby at a local zoo. He had so much fun feeding the animals. My little guy's enthusiasm for the world around him never ceases to bring a smile to my face. I love to experience things through his eyes! I am truly grateful for him.

Tomorrow we will be spending part of our day with my mother and my grandmother, two wonderful ladies who have always been there for me throughout my life.

Just wanted to share the cards I made for the wonderful mother figures in my life.

An Apple for Teacher

Now that I have decided to stop working for an indefinite period of time--I will no longer be needing daycare for my little guy. I have very mixed feelings about this--I absolutely love our daycare; the teachers are wonderful and my little guy has so much fun at school. Daycare has really helped him develop in so many ways-- he learns from the other kids and he interacts on a social level with children and other adults. All of those things are so important for toddlers. On the other hand I am going to be happy to have him home again and not have to rush him off to school three days a week so that I can get to work on time. Regardless, we will miss the center and all of the friends we have made there.

I have been working on a few thank you cards for his classroom teachers. How can you really say thanks to someone who has taken such good care of your most valuable possession? Well, I'm sure there are better ways, but a handmade thank you is a great way to show that I am truly grateful.

What I love the most about these cards are the sentiments, which are just so heart rendering and meaningful. The stamps that I used are Papertrey Ink's Teacher's Apple set. I bought this set a few months ago knowing that it would be one that I would return to again and again, especially when my son is in school. Instead of just simply stamping the sentiments on the inside of the cards, I created a magnet that was part of the cards design and which included the sentiment. A few of the magnets fit inside of a pocket, while the third is attached by another magnet that I placed under the patterned paper.

The magnet simply offers another way for the teacher to enjoy the card. Hopefully, the teachers will put it up in a place where they can see it everyday. Not only will it remind them of my little guy, but just why they were drawn to teaching in the first place.

The gift box is actually a re-purposed cigar tin. My hubby likes to indulge in the occasional cigar, so it's not too often that I get my hands on one of his empty tins. I've never actually re-purposed a tin before, so I would like to think of it more as an experiment than something I will actually be giving to the teachers. The main reason for this is that I went a bit crazy with the Modge-Podge glue. Not having experience with it, I laid it on a bit too thick-- a mistake I won't make next time. Otherwise, I am happy with it and it's perfect to adhere the magnet to and a gift card fits perfectly inside.

I definitely plan to list similar cards and gifts in my Etsy shop sometime by the end of the month, just in time for the end of the school year. I am also planning on putting together a few book mark cards, using the same stamp set and patterned papers.

Happy May Day

I woke up this morning with a renewed sense of hope. May is here -- and with it come so many wonderful things. This May represents a time for me that I will once again be adjusting to a new routine and emerging to a different way of looking at life. My last day of work will be May 13th--it has been a great experience for me, but it is time to focus on some other things that have been a bit neglected during the past eight months. I am both excited and apprehensive to return to my role as Stay at home mom -- will my little guy enjoy being home with me? How will I handle the stress of being home again? Will I be able to strike a balance between my needs and the needs of my son? Well, all the normal questions that we mom's ask ourselves. So instead of dwelling on the what ifs, I've decided to meditate on the hear and now and share some beautiful images of the many wonderful things that are sprouting up in our yard;

Have a Happy Easter

Well, it's the end of a very long week and I'm not quite in the mood for a holiday. I would actually enjoy a nice quite Sunday, but instead we will be traveling to Northern New Jersey to see a house full of family. I never got around to making the Easter cards I had planned, but managed to make one Easter project which will be a gift for my Mom.

The paper I used was on clearance at Michael's on Thursday,and fortunately I already owned the coordinating buttons and paper flowers. The colors are definitely spring like, although not your traditional Easter colors. I thought it might be something she can hang somewhere in the house throughout the Spring.

A Handfull of Cutsie Cards

Just a quick post with a few cards to share.I apologize for the shortness but my little guy had a rough night, he woke up coughing and crying at 3am and I never really got back to sleep. I'm feeling a bit woozy right about now.

The first card I want to share is one that started as an idea that was dancing around in my head all day yesterday. I managed to put it together before I picked up my little guy from school. I was so happy that I was able to incorporate my idea to fit the 2S4U sketch of the week, just when I thought I would never find the time to fit in a challenge.

I've been having so much fun playing with We R Memory Keepers White Out line of paper and it's perfect for fun birthday cards.

The final card is one I made as a special request. I really had fun with it--I got all my pretty girly girl paper and glitter out! I even customized the envelope--I couldn't stop myself. I'm also currently obsessed with textured card stock-- it's just luscious! I used Bazzil and Stampin 'Up textured card stock on all three of these cards. I just can't get enough of it!

Blackouts, Fire Trucks and Sketch Challenges

In the last 24 hours my little town in Central New Jersey has been in near panic mode. We had a mini crisis last evening, around 10 pm, when all the power went out on our block. At the time I was cranking out some cards for a few weekly challenges and my hubby was studying for his boating test. While most people might have thrown in the towel and just went to bed, my hubby pulled out our emergency power source-- an old car battery and Jimmy rigged a light source in our bedroom. I secretly call him MacGyver, secretly because he doesn't know who that is.

This morning everything was back to normal, so I thought I would take my little guy out for a walk to enjoy some beautiful weather. I love walking with him, obviously it's a great way for him to use up some of his energy, but it also gives me a chance to slow down and really focus on him. We stopped to look at all kinds of things along the way and even had a bit of adventure at the Library. While we were there picking out some books the fire alarms went off and the building was evacuated. It seemed to be some kind of glitch related to the blackout, but even still every fire company in town responded. We got to stand by while three firetrucks pulled up, sirens wailing and lights flashing, and about ten firemen streamed into the PL to make sure things were A-OK. My little guy was in heaven--what more could a 2 year old boy hope for, except to get a chance to sit in the fire truck, which didn't happen.

The next is based on a sketch from the Card Patterns blog; I used Making Memories Sabrina Paper and matching paper flowers. I also got a chance to use my new Martha Stewart border punches, a recent splurge of mine.

Just in Time for Spring

Wow- things have been hectic lately. I have barely had any down time, let alone time for card crafting. I took one week off from everything craft related in order to try and catch up with all of the housework and organizing projects that have been going on at home. My kitchen is finally back in order and better than ever, I'm totally loving it! Although things are out of boxes and put back where they need to be, we still need to paint and complete some other finishing touches--but there is no rush for that.

Spring appears to be here, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is actually hear to stay. Mainly I'm concerned for all of my little spring bulbs that have been pushing up their heads in my yard. I would just be devastated if another frost came in.

Last weekend the weather was so spring like that we were able to take advantage of it and spend the morning at the park. My little guy was so excited, he just loves being out of doors. He really got a kick out of feeding the geese in the lake all of his Cheerios. Of course later, when he wanted a snack, he could not understand that Mommy had no more Cheerios because he had fed them all to the "duckies". Well, he's only 2-- rational thought is not an option for him as of yet.

Just quickly I wanted to share a few challenges that I have managed to sneak in under the wire. The first one is for a brand new blog that is just in their second week. 365 Cards is a great new place for card crafters to find some of the best challenges. The great thing about it is that there is a new challenge every day and it's always jammed packed with inspiration. Since the last few weeks have been so hectic I haven't had a chance to get in on any of the challenges, but when I saw this great sketch from Kazan Clark that was featured on the 365 blog I couldn't resist any longer. Also, I've been dying to put together something using the color combo of yellow and gray-- it's so hot right now.

I also finished up a card based on the CPS sketch challenge for this week. This card is also for a friend of mine, one of my closest and oldest friends. He has recently completed a major portion of his PhD program, which he has been working hard at for the past 4 years. Although he's not quite done yet, he has come to a major milestone in his education that serves reason to celebrate. I put this card together using Basicgrey's Marakesh collection because this certain friend just loves all things with an eastern influence-- so I thought it would just be perfect. Also, it has a bit of a masculine edge-- I just didn't think he was going to appreciate all of the flowers and ribbons that I tend to indulge in.

I painted the large chipboard star with two different layers of acrylic paint and a coat of crackling medium to create the distressed look. I also used my paper piercer and my brand new Stampin' Up mat pack to create the faux stitching. This was the first time I attempted this type of faux stitch--so the first one is a bit shaky, but by the third one I really had it down and actually really love this method.

Feeling Light Blue

Well, it's hard to believe it's already March 1st. Our kitchen project is coming along beautifully, but our house is still a mess and I'm feeling less than organized. Maybe that's why I'm awake at 6:30 am on a Sunday instead of off deep in dream land. I just have lots of things floating around in my head, and some of them are not the most positive of thoughts. Well, I better try to push them down and get back to sleep.

A Handfull of Challenges

Wow- lately I have seen a number of new sketch challenges and other creative card challenges popping up in the cyber world, it seems like it's the latest fad these days. It's always exciting to participate in challenges, and it's a great way to spark those creative juices. Their are so many good challenges out there, I only wish I had time to create something for all of them. Here are a few I managed to cobble together for this week;

This is my card for sketch #3 on the Card Patterns blog. I will have to admit that it is one of my more looser interpretations of a card sketch. I really had fun making this card, although it completely changed during the creative process from what I had intended it to be. It's also doing double duty as my entry for this weeks challenge on the Card-a-licious blog. This week's challenge just asks you not to include a sentiment, it was too easy to pass up.

I also managed to squeeze in a card for sketch #104 on the CPS blog.

And finally, since I am such a huge fan of all things Basicgrey I just couldn't pass on participating in this weeks Basicgrey Challenge. I used paper from BG's Sultry line to create this little card.

Stress ; a Suprising Motivator

I am often surprised by the way my body chooses to react to the stress I encounter in my life. Typically, when under stress, I suddenly forget how to get a good nights sleep and I feel a strong need to eat everything in sight. On very rare occasions, I do just the opposite with sleep and actually loose my appetite. Although, it's a great way to jump start that diet, it's definitely not the healthiest. Let's face it, no one likes stress or wants to be stressed out, but life would be plain boring with out it. Lately, I find myself dealing with my stress by cranking out card creation after card creation-- go figure, actually a healthy, if not obsessive, way to deal with my stress-- I'm seeing progress!

Because of my prolific card making I have been able to complete a bunch of cards for a few of this weeks current card challenges. First off, I actually completed one card to meet the requirements for two different challenges. I used Kazan's sketch 20 from this weeks challenge on 2S4U and I also played a long with the challenge on the Card-A-Licious blog. This is my first time participating in the Card-A-Licious challenge. It was a good week, since I just received an order of some beautiful green card stock, so I thought hey why not give it a try. Also, you just have to love anything with licious at the end of it!

Second, I put together a birthday card using the current sketch on the CPS blog. I love this paper from Making Memories and the matching paper flowers.They actually have an entire co-ordinating line with additional sized papers and embellishments available. The included patterns are so eloquent and stylish; damask, hounds tooth and pin stripping-- you can't get trendier than this.This is actually the second birthday card I have made with this collection. I find myself drawn to this collection whenever I have to make a birthday card for one of my amazing female friends. The color combo of pink, white and black is so eloquent and graceful-- it's a perfect testament to just how fabulous they are!

Saying Goodbye and Hello!

Today we waved by-by to our old kitchen cabinets as they were carted off for scrap metal. It was a very strange sensation seeing my old sink and cabinets loaded up onto a truck. For a brief moment I felt sad about it, but life goes on and a brand new sink is soon to be installed--well, maybe in a day or two (fingers crossed).

I also got to say goodbye to a project that has been taking up room on my desk for a very long time now. I finally finished the mini- album I have been making for my cousin's new baby. I had been putting off completing it with the excuse that I still had a few more weeks, well-- she had the baby on Monday! I'm so happy for her and although I have not talked to her yet I have heard that mom and baby are doing fine. Since I was not called into work today I thought I better use the time to finish up the album, because I intend to give it to her as a gift when I go and visit her and the little one.

Although I am happy that I made this album, I am glad now to have finally completed it. I had been working on it in bits and pieces for about four months. It definitely was a learning experience for me, being the first album I had ever made. It's funny to see how my style evolved as I put each new set of pages together. Unfortunately, I 'm not too happy with the first few sets-- but by the time I realized this there was no turning back.

I chose to go with muted colors for the album. Although I wanted it to be all about baby boy, I didn't want it to be too pastel or frilly. So I chose the muted colors and used geometric shapes to play up on the baby boy theme. I also tried to work in as many journaling spots as I could. I'm thinking this will be a great album for her to save all her very favorite pictures and memories of her new son. When they are little there is barely any time to sit down and write about all of the new things they are doing and your own thoughts on being a mother. This way when she has a few free minutes she can sit down with a stack of her fav. pics and jot a few thoughts about them. It will be something she'll be grateful for in the future.

In the end, I wonder if she will like the present. As I look it over I realize that it has a very eclectic style, while that works for me, she's more of a "everything needs to match" kind of girl. Well, hopefully she'll know that it's a gift that comes from the heart and as a new mom, she'll probably be excited for yet another reason to show off her new baby.

In the future I plan to make a few mini-album's featuring my own little guy-- but will probably not choose this for a gift option again any time soon.

Brand New Sketch Challenge

I recently found a brand new sketch challenge on the web called Card Patterns. It is just their second challenge and I am very excited to be able to participate in it.

This card started out as a masculine Birthday card, but like so many creations it seemed to veer off it's intended path as it started to come together and ended up as a Thank You card. It still has a very masculine feeling to it, thanks to Basicgrey's Boxer DP. I am still planning on making that Birthday card for a friend of the family and will try and go back to the Boxer paper to see what else I can come up with.

Kitchen Project Progress

I am very excited, we have walls--and a ceiling!

Also, wanted to share a card I recently completed. I haven't had much time for crafting these past two weeks, but what I did work on I really enjoyed. Once again, getting caught up in the creative process is such a great way to deal with stress.

This card was actually a request for a person who loves books. This was really fun, since I got to incorporate two things that I really love into one project, reading and card making. I actually borrowed the idea for this card from two sources. I recently saw a card on-line that incorporated a bookmark and I saw a beautiful handmade bookmark in a recent issue of Paper Craft, that's where I found the wonderful quote.

The idea for the magnets was all mine. It was the easiest way to secure the bookmark to the card, and it serves a double duty-- it also makes a beautiful magnet that can be displayed on the fridge as well!

The only problem I ran into was how to fit in a Birthday sentiment while not clashing with the bookmark quote. I thought about fitting it in on the front, but then felt there would be too much going on in the same space. Finally, I decided to include an inside greeting, tying it together with matching DP.

Happy Valentine's Day -- A Flash of Beauty Amongst the Chaos

Happy Valentine's Day, and what a beautiful day it is here in Central Jersey for Valentine's day. I'm sure many couples and family's are out together enjoying this suprisingly spring like weather. Unfortunatly, I'm sitting alone in my living room thinking of ways to pass the time. My little guy is spending the next few days at his grandparents, and my hubby who is only a few yards away from me is out of reach and unavailable as he is currently in the midst of our huge kitchen re-modeling. Thankfully, I have a box of chocolate to keep me company and to help take my mind off the chaos that was once known as my kitchen. Just a few pictures to share of the current state of things.

Our fridge is currently in our dinning room, along with our microwave, our kitchen table and all of the other contents of my kitchen, as well as our new dish washer and a pile of the new cabinets. I can hardle believe there is any free room left in my house at all. I spent all day Thursday cooking so that I could load my fridge with food for us to eat that could easily be warmed up in the microwave-- after that runs out, I'm going to start ordering take out.

I'm not sure which is scarrier, the mess inside my house or the pile of trash, remains of the old kitchen, that is now collecting in our backyard. Luckily we have a local dump that will take most of the trash, but I have no idea how we are going to get it there. OK-I think I need to eat another piece of chocolate right now.

On the bright side, I spent a really enjoyable Valentine's day morning with my little guy at my parent's house. He's just the perfect Valentine! We spent the morning eatings some Valentine's day cupcakes and watching Peter Pan. His grandparents bought him a toy nail gun for a V-day present, which he just loved-- although he's already running around with it as if it's some kind of weapon instead of pretending to build a log cabin or something. Well, in a few years he will be ready to jump into any project that my hubby has going on.

Although things are crazy right now and life is once again turned upside down, I am trying to stay focused on the positive. In a month or two I will have a wonderful new kitchen, that will really help to improve the everyday quality of our lives-- and it's all thanks to my hubby's hard work. In the mean time I still have half a box of chocolates to help me cope with the stress!!

2S4U Sketch Challenge

I would just like to apologize for two things right off the bat; first, for the very unoriginal title of this post; and second, the awful photographs I have posted. Unfortunately, it's already 10:30 pm and it has been a very long day. I'm doing the best I can with a low level of light and an even lower level of brain power. I did manage to complete Laura's sketch 18 and Rae's bonus sketch-- I had so much fun participating last week, I just had to give it another go.

For Laura's sketch, I was planning to make a birthday card for someone special in my family. Unfortunately, I'm not quite sure how I will position the sentiment into the design of my card, I'm going to play around with it when I'm a bit more bright eyed. I was inspired by the vintage wallpaper feel of this Basicgrey paper. Even though this line was put out as their Christmas paper, I think the muted greens and reds work well for other occasions too.

For Rae's bonus sketch, I made a card for my cousin who is expecting her first baby sometime in February. It's a very exciting time for her and I can't wait to meet her little fellow. My little guy is all geared up to be a big cousin. He's already planning on teaching him how to run around, jump on stuff, yell really loud, jump off stuff, you know all that good boy stuff. I just hope the two little ones will grow up to be great friends, just as my cousin and myself have. All the paper used for this card is from Cosmo Cricket and the stamp is from a set from Papertrey Ink.

Well, this is really conquering two goals with one felt swoop. I've completed another card challenge and I now have two more cards (almost) ready to go for my loved ones. Great, now I can sleep soundly.

Snow Day

It's hard to believe, but we've finally had enough snow to constitute a snow day here in central NJ. What's really funny about it, is that we got barely two inches and it's more like slush than snow. Meanwhile an hour away in north Jersey, where my folks live, they have been getting pounded by snow storms all season.

I was hoping for a bit more of the white fluffy stuff myself. When my little guy woke up this morning he was so excited to see snow and was dying to get outside and play in it. When we did manage to make it outside everything was wet and slushy, so I quickly scooted him into the car. It's no fun to play in slush anyway.
Well, since a snow day means no work for me and since my little guy is at daycare, I had plenty of time to work on my submission for the 100th sketch challenge over at the CPS blog.

"Beautiful Style Stars of the First Magnitude"

Is that not the greatest title!I borrowed it from this old add for lady's dresses from a 1945 newspaper. Where, might you ask, did I get my hands on a newspaper from 1945? Well, actually it was under some of the flooring in my house that my husband just ripped up. A 64 year old piece of newspaper, which up until this point was acting as some kind of insulation in our old mud room. That's pretty old, but our house goes back even further than that-- probably to 1895. He was about to throw it out with a bunch of the old wood he's been ripping out, but when I spotted this image in the garbage can I knew it was a keeper. I love all things vintage, and you can't get more vintage than this. It's really beautiful in that timeless sort of way.
My hubby's been hard at work making all the necessary updates and repairs we need to do before we can install our new kitchen. The first phase of the project is to secure the rotted out floor of our old mud room so that we can use it as a laundry room. Right now our stacked washer and dryer is taking up valuable space in our kitchen. Once we move that into our new and improved mud room--- which also has a new toasty gas heater, thanks to my hubby-- we can plunk a dishwasher right in it's place. Well, it's actually easier said than done, but were hoping it works out like that. The picture I've included is actually the area of the floor he's torn up, the cement support he's installed to support the new beams, the red jack he used to lift up that section of the house and the dirt beneath that area of the house. It's really frightening to go in there these days, but I know it will be such a wonderful improvement in the near future.

I have to say my hubby has been really wonderful about everything. He's working his tail off so that he can improve the way our household functions and I'm really grateful to him for that. Also, he's been very supportive of my card making. Of course, he's not too pleased when I spend extra money on my hobby, but he's happy to see that I have an interest that makes me happy. He's even developing an eye for my style. A few night ago I came home from my monthly stamping class at my local library with two cards to show him. He took one look at them and said, "Nice cards, but there not your style." Well, the cards that I came home with are great, even if they are different from my typical style. We always learn two new stamping techniques and I always have the greatest time when I go. I just thought it was the sweetest thing that my hubby actually get's my style, especially since he's not the artsy type-- he leaves that to me.

As I mentioned, the cards I came home with were great, in fact down right adorable. I'm still very new to stamping, so I have much to learn and found this session invaluable. For the first card, the rocket ship, we colored in the stamped image with ink using a blender pen. That's what gives it the water colored look. We also used a sponge and ink to create the look of the earth below. The cupcake card had to be the most fun card I have made so far. To create the look of icing we used a craft ink re-inker in white and a small drop of re-inker in red. It went on thick and creamy just like icing. We used a paint brush to spread it around. Then glitter was applied directly to the ink mixture and everything was heat set. The cherry was colored in with red ink and then we applied a clear glaze over it to give it a good enough to eat look. So, even though these cards are not exactly my style, I love them and plan on using both of these techniques in my own future creations.

A Couple of New Color Combos for Valentines

I mentioned in my last post that I was working on putting together a few more Valentines cards using some non-traditional color combos. I had so much fun making these cards. The interesting thing is that the idea for both of these cards danced around in my head for a few days before I actually made them. I just love that part of the creative process. Even when I laid down to sleep at night I would envision how the cards might turn out, the colors I would use and the elements I would include. When an idea comes to me in this way, mulling it over and working it out for a few days, I always enjoy the process of actually creating the card so much more than when I just sit down at my workspace and try to throw something together on a whim. Of course, when I set about creating these particular cards they still took on a life of their own and became something just a little bit different than I had envisioned. But that's OK too, because when it comes to card making, at least for me, it's all about the process of discovery.

A Blue Valentine

This is my version of Kazan's sketch #18 from the Two Sketches For You blog. This is my very first submission to their weekly challenge. I have been a fan of this blog for awhile now though.
For this Valentine's day card I wanted to try some new colors, other than just the traditional reds and pinks I have been using so far. Of course I could not get away from those colors entirely, but I thought this shade of blue might mix things up a bit. I have a few other Valentine's day cards using non-traditional colors that I will be posting soon enough.

So Many Valentine's

My First CPS Sketch Challenge

Since schools were closed on Monday, I had a day to myself to put together a card for this weeks Card Positioning System Sketch Challenge. Although I have been playing along and making cards based on their sketches for the last few weeks, this is the first time I have one ready to go in time to make the deadline-- yippee! Since this week participants were able to choose any of the sketches out of the 99 existing sketches, in honor of their 100th challenge, I chose sketch 83. I've been making Valentines day cards like mad, so why not one more. I hope you enjoy it!

2009 is Off and Running

No, this is not a vintage image that I am planning to use on a card project. This is a picture of my kitchen sink, circa 2009! For the last three years, since we moved into our house, I've had to make due with a very outdated and less than functional kitchen. And the worst part is-- it's really ugly!
Well, my hubby actually took the decision himself that this would be the year that something is finally done about our kitchen. He didn't have to ask me if I thought it would be a good idea, he already knew what my answer would be. Ultimately, it had to be his decision since he will be doing all the work himself--which is going to be a huge undertaking for him. Sigh, I am torn. I'm so happy that the work is about to begin and grateful that we are in the position to do this- but I'm sad because our lives are going to be crazy during the entire project and we won't have much family time until it's done. Well, all the sacrifices will be for a greater good-- I just have to keep reminding myself of this when I feel like pulling my hair out!

Just to give you a better idea of what we are facing, if the sink picture didn't say it all: we will need all new cabinets and counter tops (note the white counters in the picture; that's contact paper I affixed over the original scuzzy black counter tops), sheet rock for the walls and ceiling; electrical outlets and under the counter lighting; a new sink and a dishwasher (Finally!); counter space around the sink and cabinets near the sink for storing dishes; we will need to close up a window that looks into a mud room; and a new microwave to replace our 15 year old one-- a left over from my college life. It sounds like a lot and it is, but we need to do all of this with a budget that is normally a drop in the bucket for any other kitchen do over. Well, that's why my hubby's going to be doing it-- and thank goodness he is handy, I have complete faith in his skills. Oh yes, and I forgot to mention what we need to do to repair the mud room in order to move our washer and dryer that is currently in the kitchen-- I'll have pictures soon of that.

Well, in order to escape the reality of what we are getting ourselves into I have turned to excessive card making, it's just what the Dr. ordered. I made a card for my Mom's birthday which is coming up at the end of the month. I made it based on a card sketch from the blog 2 Sketches 4 You. I really wanted to have it done to post on their blog, but the kitchen planning was a bit distracting so I missed the deadline for the challenge, oh well- there is always another week. The paper, stamp and felt flowers are all from a kit I received with a purchase from Emma's Paperie.

I made a horrible mistake when I originally tried to stamp the image directly onto the paper. I thought I was going to have to trash the card. That's when I got the idea to stamp the image onto a piece of transparency and affix it over the botched image. It's not perfect, but I still like the way it came out. Something I really love about this craft is how imperfections are always doors to other creative possibilities. So many times projects don't come out the way I had intended, but they still look great and make me feel happy. I think I really needed something like that in my life. Perfection is wonderful, but we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be perfect these days. Sometimes it's just as great to be imperfect, after all we are just human.

The beginning of a new year is always so refreshing and hopeful. Of course I've made my laundry list of resolutions, and most likely I'll never live up to my own expectations, but for the moment it makes me feel good to think that I might. As the new year begins I would like to wish many blessings and much happiness for all of my friends and family throughout 2009.

Our New Year celebration was a quiet one, which was just the way we wanted it. We spent it with another family that also has small boys. That meant a few hours of crazy, breathless running around, and then the last few hours before the new year spent in quiet grown up talk after the boys had settled in for the night. Our little guy was supposed to be asleep in his pack-n-play through the New Year, but since an awful cough kept him awake longer than I had hoped, I eventually gave in and brought him down around 11:30-- he sipped sparkling cider and watched the ball drop in Time's Square with us.

Our first day of the New Year was spent at home relaxing and playing, and yes, I even managed to do some card making. Just a few images to share....

A few cards to commemorate the New Year. The first two had a vintage feel, thanks to the vintage postcard images I recently purchased from an on-line store. I also made two more cards with a more modern and trendy design to them, just to mix things up a bit. I just love this shade of blue card stock, Aqua Mist-- as it lends a classy and eloquent touch and reminds me of a crisp winter morning. It also reminds me of the beautiful blue that Tiffany & Co. use for their gift boxes, so I thought it would work well for a wedding card-- too bad I don't know anyone that is getting married anytime soon.

Counting Down the Days of Winter

Christmas 2008 has come and now it has gone. It was really a great year for our family; we had the chance to all be together and really enjoyed each other's company. My little guy really had a blast this Christmas. He received a bunch of great gifts from Santa and even a special visit from the jolly old Elf himself. On Christmas eve Santa made a special appearance at our family get together. Well, my little guy sure knows a good thing when he sees it and he was right next to Santa the whole time ready to take all those extra gifts off his hands. I was so happy to see that he had no fear of the bearded one. It seems like a candy cane can always do the trick -- no wonder we have to tell children not to take candy from strangers.

These past few days following Christmas have been lazy ones, but why shouldn't they be. I definitely need to relax after all the running around and planning involved for this holiday. Yesterday, the weather was so mild here that we were able to spend some time in the yard and I had a chance to try out some of the features on our new camera-- a gift from Santa! The temp. was in the low sixties, and you could almost start to believe that spring is right around the corner. Wouldn't that be nice! Let's face it, after Christmas winter is such a dreadful time of year. Well, I'll have my daydreams of warm afternoons and BBQ's to keep me going through January and February.

Merry Christmas

Just a few last minute holiday creations that I wanted to share with you. First, a gift card holder I put together for one of the gifts we are giving to my parents. I used paper from Basic Gray's Figgy Pudding collecting-- which I absolutely love. The silouette of the little angel placing the star at the top of the feather christmas tree has a real vintage feel to it. It might look like a stamped image, but it's actually something I found in a holiday crafting edition of a BH & G's magazine. I scanned it, then selected it with the magic wand in photoshop, moved it to a clear layer and then printed it out onto a tan card stock. I inked the edges with Martha Stewart's Copper and Brownstone inks to give it an aged look. I really like how the card, and particularly the image turned out. Altough I've come across a number of Christmas stamp sets that I wouldn't mind getting my hands on, I also love to take something and use it in a way that it wasn't acutally meant to be used. It really get's my creativity on!

I also made two Christmas tree ornaments using the same image. I had a few sheets of Melissa France's vintage Christmas DP that I absolutely wanted to somehow incorporate into my holiday decor, so I thought that they would be the perfect fit for this image. Since I had the image on a clear PS layer I was able to resize it and print it directly onto the DP. I then used Modge Podge to adhere it to a piece of cardstock, which I cut out in the shape of a gift tag. I added a piece of sheet music to the bottom to add some interest and finished it off with some ribbon embelishments and some glitter and gem stones to give it that Christmas bling. Although these pictures came out awful, they really do look nice on the tree. I plan on making "improve my photography skills" one of my New Year's resolutions.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Cupcakes

Well, I've been keeping myself busy on these final days leading up to the big holiday. I've been baking, wrapping presents, eating cookies, eating cookies-- um, yes the diet will begin right after New years. I am really determined to perfect my cupcakes and just wanted to share the latest image of my last batch. Thanks to the advice of my good friend Melissa, who is an awesome baker and cake decorator, I finally have the right tools to achieve my aesthetic ambitions. I went to Michael's and purchased a large star tip and a bag so that I could achieve that swirling sweet icing effect. OK- it's still not perfect-- but practice does make perfect-- so there are more cupcakes to come, at least until the new year when I start that diet!

Little Boy Blue

This will be my last post for today. I just wanted to try and catch up with everything that has been going on recently and share what I have been making as well. I spent some time over the weekend working on a card for my cousin's upcoming baby shower. I'm really proud of this card because I think it really defines my style as a card maker. It incorporates some beautiful designer papers, a rubber stamp that has been paper pieced and some fun embellishments like baby blue rick-rack, glitter, buttons and chipboard flowers that have been painted to look distressed.
